Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue review

4th July 2024 | Author: Victoria Woollaston-Webber
Verdict

The Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue’s thick, creamy texture offers immediate and long-lasting hydration, which is particularly beneficial for people with dry skin around the eyes, like me.

The rich formula leaves the skin feeling nourished and protected, especially when used at night, and ingredients like Winter Daphne Stem Cell Extract and Soy Peptides help make the skin look and feel firmer, smoother, plumper and more youthful.

I also saw a noticeable reduction in dark circles and the overall skin tone around my eyes became more even and radiant the longer the review period went on. What’s more, Charlotte Tilbury promises this cream is suitable for sensitive skin and I can confirm it didn’t cause my sensitive skin any irritation or problems. Despite the inclusion of retinyl palmitate, which is a form of retinol.

On the flip side, the cream’s rich texture won’t suit everybody. If you have oily skin or prefer lighter creams and gels, you might find the cream too heavy, especially for daytime use. It requires a bit more time to fully absorb, which can be a hassle when applying makeup.

The price point is another consideration. At £49 for a 15ml jar, the eye cream is a significant investment. While it delivers on its promises, the cost might be a barrier for some. Additionally, the jar packaging, while luxurious, is less hygienic compared to pump dispensers.

Overall, the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue is a high-performing eye cream that delivers on its claims of hydration, firming, and brightening.

It’s particularly good for people with dry or mature skin looking for a luxurious addition to their skincare routine. However, its rich texture and higher price point might not make it the best choice for everyone.

If you prioritise effective, indulgent skincare and don’t mind investing in premium products, this eye cream is a worthy consideration. If you’re looking for something cheaper, I recommend the slightly cheaper Kiehl’s Avocado Eye Treatment.

Pros
  • Rich and luxurious
  • Great as a night treatment
  • Improved texture and brightness
Cons
  • Doesn't work well under makeup
  • Expensive
  • May be too thick for some people's tastes

In our Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue review, we put the rich, luxury eye cream to the test to see if it’s worth the hype and cost

Charlotte Tilbury has earned a name of itself by selling luxury makeup and skincare products that cost a pretty penny, but promise a whole host of benefits.

One of the standout products from her extensive line – and one of the original products in the growing skincare collection – is the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue.

This eye cream is part of the brand’s Magic Skincare range, which is praised for its transformative effects and premium formulas.

The cream is designed to target the delicate skin around the eyes and promises to target fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles through a combination of vitamins, plant stem cells and minerals.

However, as with all Charlotte Tilbury products, the Magic Eye Rescue doesn’t come cheap and this can make buying it a gamble.

To help you make a more informed decision, I’ve spent the past six weeks putting the eye cream to the test on my sensitive, acne-prone mature skin.

Keep reading my Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue review to see if it lives up to the hype, works as promised and whether it’s really worth the money.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue Review

I remember when the Charlotte Tilbury skincare range was largely just the Magic Cream and Eye Rescue. In recent years, though, it’s grown significantly to include masks, serums, lip oils, SPF and more. That said, the Magic Skincare collection is still a firm favourite and, siting alongside the Magic Eye Rescue cream, you’ll also find:

  • Charlotte’s Magic Cream: This bestselling moisturiser hydrates, plumps, and smooths the skin. Suitable for all skin types, especially dry and mature skin. Read our full Charlotte’s Magic Cream review here.
  • Magic Night Cream: A richer, nourishing night cream compared to the original Magic Cream. It promises to regenerate and firm the skin overnight and is best for dry and ageing skin.
  • Magic Serum Crystal Elixir: This serum contains peptides and Vitamin C and claims to brighten, hydrate, and improve the skin texture. Especially when used with the Magic Cream. It’s  suitable for all skin types but is particularly good for people with hyperpigmentation and dark spots. Read our full Charlotte Tilbury serum review here.
  • Magic Water Cream: One of the newest entries in the Magic Skin range, the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Water Cream is lightweight, hydrating gel alternative to the thicker, richer Magic Cream.  It’s great for oily skin, or during summer months. Read our full Magic Water Cream review here.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue Formula

Charlottes Magic Eye Rescue creammamabella | mamabella

The Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue contains a blend of ingredients all aimed at making the skin around the eyes look younger and more plump. When combined, the formula promises to hydrate, firm, and brighten the eye area by reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, and puffiness.

The standout ingredients include:

  • Winter Daphne Stem Cell Extract: This extract tightens and firms the under-eye skin. It also helps to strengthen and repair the skin barrier.
  • Soy Peptides: Known for their soothing properties, soy peptides help reduce puffiness and dark circles while smoothing the skin.
  • Retinyl Palmitate: This is a gentler form of retinol that helps increase skin renewal. This means it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without the irritation often associated with other more potent forms of Vitamin A and retinol. Note the cream does also contain a small amount of retinol, too.
  • Red Algae Marigel: This ingredient contains calcium and magnesium which not only work to strengthen and soothe the skin, but it helps form a protective barrier over it which helps to lock in hydration and protect it from pollution.
  • Saccharide Isomerate: This ingredient, inspired by isotonic drinks, works to energise and hydrate the skin, making it firmer and brighter.

The Magic Eye Rescue formula also includes hydrating and nourishing ingredients including shea butter and coconut oil, which both condition the skin.

Even though Charlotte Tilbury promises the eye cream is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, if you have had problems in the past with retinol and Vitamin C, it’s worth doing a patch-test first. There’s nothing worse than skincare irritating your skin, let alone when it irritates the skin around your eye.

Similarly, the formula is non-comedogenic, meaning it shouldn’t clog pores or cause milia. However, if you experience any problems stop using the cream.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue Performance

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue Creammamabella | mamabella

As someone with dry skin around my eyes, I found the thick, creamy texture of the Magic Eye Rescue cream soothing and creamy. It feels luxurious and rich – which is good considering how expensive it is; it would be terrible if it felt cheap – and it makes the skin immediately feel smooth and hydrated.

The downside to this almost buttery texture, however, is that it doesn’t work that well under makeup. It has a tendency to feel heavy and you have to wait a while for it to properly sink in if you want to prevent it mixing with your concealer, and get the best results.

As a result, I tended to only apply the Magic Eye Rescue at night, or on mornings when I wasn’t wearing makeup. The benefit of only applying it at night is you can also apply a thicker amount, and you don’t have to massage it in too much which can cause you to pull on the skin.

My favourite way of using this cream was applying it before bed, over the top of my eye serum – I’m currently loving The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Eye Serum (£19.90). Not only did it form a protective barrier that locked in the moisture from both the serum and cream throughout the night, it also helped protect the skin from rubbing too much against my pillow. I like to wear a silk eye mask too, but I often forget!

In the morning, my skin always felt soft and plump.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue Before and After

Over the course of my six-week Magic Eye Rescue review period, I saw a reduction in the fine lines around my eyes. My skin looked plumper and more radiant, and my dark circles appeared brighter

Over the course of my six-week Magic Eye Rescue review period, I saw a reduction in the fine lines around my eyes. My skin looked plumper and more radiant, and my dark circles – which, to be fair aren’t terrible but are noticeable – appeared brighter. The longer I used it, the greater the results too.

The ease of use is another factor worth mentioning. The cream spreads smoothly and absorbs reasonably well, despite its rich texture. There’s no strong scent, which is a bonus for me and my sensitive skin. The eye cream does come in a refillable jar and while this makes it easy to control how much I use, unless you use a skincare spatula you risk adding bacteria to the formula.

If it came with a pump, or in a squeezy tube I think it would be even easier and safer.

Price-wise, the Magic Eye Rescue is on the higher end at £49 for a 15ml jar. While this does make it an investment, I found that a little goes a long way. The results I experienced made the cost worthwhile for me. What’s more, I saw this results even though I largely only used it once a day, rather than the recommended twice a day.

Online reviews seem to echo my experience, too. Many users praise the product for its hydrating and brightening effects. Some said that they experienced an initial sting, likely due to the retinol, but most said that it subsides with regular use and this isn’t something I experienced.

How I tested the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue

I tested the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue over six weeks to see how well it worked. Following the brand’s advice, I began by using the eye cream twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, after cleansing my skin. However, I didn’t love how it worked with my makeup so I switched to using it mainly at night as a treatment and only applying it occassionally in the morning.

To make sure I could clearly see the effects of the eye cream, I didn’t change any other parts of our skincare routine during this time.

For the days when I did apply it in the morning, I gently patted a small amount of the cream around my eye area and let it absorb before putting on makeup, which took up to half an hour on average! At night, I repeated the process but used slightly more cream, and didn’t massage it as much. Instead leaving it to form a mask while I slept.

Throughout the six weeks, I paid close attention to how my skin looked and felt. I checked for improvements in hydration, texture, and the appearance of fine lines and dark circles. I also watched for any signs of irritation or breakouts to see if the product was gentle on my skin.

By keeping everything else in my skincare routine the same, it helped me clearly see how the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue affected my skin. This way, I could accurately determine if it made my skin look better, feel better, or caused any issues.

How to use Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue

To get the best results from the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue, follow these steps:

  1. Cleanse: Start with a clean face to make sure that the eye cream can fully absorb into your skin. Use your regular cleanser and gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
  2. Apply a small amount: Using your ring finger, because it’s a weaker finger so applies the least pressure, take a small amount of the cream from the jar and dab it onto the orbital bone around each eye. Start from the inner corners and move outward. Avoid getting the product too close to your eyes to prevent irritation.
  3. Gently pat and massage: Lightly pat the cream into your skin using gentle tapping motions. You can also gently massage around the entire eye socket to enhance absorption and improve blood circulation, which can help further reduce puffiness.
  4. Wait for it to be absorbed: If you’re applying in the morning, I recommend you wait at least half an hour before applying makeup.

If you’re using it a night, you can use slightly more and leave it to form a barrier on the skin that works its magic as you sleep. You don’t need to massage it as much this way. To maximise the impact, I suggest using it over an eye serum.

Things to Avoid

  • A little goes a long way. Using too much product can lead to residue buildup and might not provide any additional benefits.
  • If you’re using other skincare products with strong active ingredients like additional retinoids or exfoliants, be careful. Combining too many active ingredients can lead to irritation, especially around the sensitive eye area.
  • If you have sensitive skin, it’s wise to perform a patch test before applying the cream around your eyes to ensure you don’t experience any adverse reactions.
