Maybelline launches Brave Together campaign to break down stigma around anxiety and depression

The connection between beauty products and mental health are much more closely linked than may first seem.

The whole concept for mamabella came about when our founder sought solace in her makeup and skincare during a bout of postnatal depression (you can read more on our About page), and there have been various studies that have shown how people find relief and enjoy the order and control that comes from taking care of their skin and body.

It’s with this in mind that Maybelline New York has launched its latest initiative called Brave Together.

Anxiety affects more than 284 million people globally, while depression affects more than 264 million. Half of all mental health conditions start by the age of just 14 and with COVID-19, these numbers are rising.

Maybelline Brave Together is a global program set up to help “de-stigmatise anxiety and depression, provide critical one-on-one support and help everyone, everywhere bravely take on their world.”

GET SUPPORT VIA TEXT

Maybelline has partnered with Crisis Text Line to provide increased access to free, 24/7 confidential crisis counselling via text message.

If you need to use this service, text TOGETHER to 741741 to connect with a crisis counsellor.

You can also text SHOUT to 85258 in the UK to text with a trained Crisis Volunteer.

Over the past two years, Maybelline has commissioned research to better understand the topic of mental health and has been working with non-profit partners Crisis Text Line, The JED Foundation and National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

“Maybelline has always believed in the power of making things happen in your life. And we know that mental health is critical in feeling ready to do that,” said Trisha Ayyagari, Global Brand President, Maybelline New York.

“We want to use our global voice to de-stigmatise the conversation around mental health and make support easily accessible. Now, more than ever, we need to be there for those living with anxiety and depression.”

By partnering with leading non-profit organisations, Maybelline’s Brave Together program has a specially curated online site that gives people access to an online community featuring real-world inspiration and stories from people on their own mental health journey, as well as mental health experts, tips, and resources.

One of the program’s key experts is Dr. Kathleen Pike, clinical psychologist and professor at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health.

Dr. Pike is a scientific advisor to the Brave Together program and is leading a global study, funded by Maybelline, on the rates and reasons for anxiety and depression specific to Gen Z women.

As part of this, Maybelline has partnered with Crisis Text Line to provide increased access to free, 24/7 confidential crisis counselling via text message. If you need to use this service, text TOGETHER to 741741 to connect with a crisis counsellor. You can also text SHOUT to 85258 in the UK to text with a trained Crisis Volunteer.

Maybelline is also committed to investing $10M over the next five years to mental health organisations worldwide.
