Oia Skin review: Can these silicone Oia skin patches really get rid of wrinkles overnight?

3rd February 2022 | Author: Victoria Woollaston-Webber
Verdict

We were incredibly sceptical about whether these patches would work and we’re not afraid to admit that we were wrong.

The science is there to show why they work and, in our experience, the Oia Skin patches more than lived up to this. They did not disappoint.

Although the company claims the patches work up to 30 times before you need to replace them, we found they became less effective after about 20 uses. By this point, they did seem to improve our overall moisture and collagen levels anyway so this is a minor complaint.

For this Oia Skin review, we picked up the neck, chest, eyes, smile, and forehead patches on sale, for £56 – down from £80. Plus, we used our MAMABELLA discount to get an extra 10% off! This is a tad on the pricey side, even when they’re on sale, yet we have to admit, we think they’re more than worth it.

From all the lotions and potions we’ve tried, these patches are the only beauty treatment we’ve found that noticeably improved the skin on our chest and neck. And it does it while you sleep, so it’s entirely effortless.

We’re 36 – so our skin is starting to show signs of ageing but none of them have truly bedded in just yet (thank goodness). This means that if your wrinkles are deeper or you find fine lines creeping further and further along your face, you’ll likely benefit even more from these patches.

We thought the original Oia Skin patches were game-changing, yet with Oia Skin 2.0, the brand has more than exceeded even our wildest expectations.

If you’re anything like us, you would have likely been served countless ads for Oia Skin patches in recent months. The LA company appears to have ramped up ad spending, especially on Instagram, and we’ve been a little bombarded.

Oia Skin sells silicone patches designed to get rid of wrinkles. There are smaller patches for your under eyes, your crow’s feet, and around your mouth. You can additionally buy larger versions for your neck and chest.

In fact, the full range of patches available include:

Each of the pads we tested for this Oia Skin review – and all the patches in the range – are made from silicone. They’re almost jelly-like in texture and are smooth on one side, while being sticky on the other.

You remove the sticky side from a sheet of plastic, place the pads on the desired areas and then go to bed. You can also use them for shorter periods of time – for instance, we use the eye patches for about 10 minutes before applying our makeup in the morning to reduce the fine lines around our eyes and soften the skin ahead of applying concealer.

Last Summer, we wrote this Oia Skin patches review based on the original design and in that time, the brand has since released what it’s calling Oia Skin 2.0.

Oia Skin 2.0 patches are made from thicker silicone, offering greater hydration. They also have a dotted surface to make the adhesive stronger, and less likely to slip off in the middle of the night. In fact, the silicone layer is 400% thicker, meaning they’ll last twice as long – 30 days – if you look after them.

So of course, we had to trial these new patches to see if they live up to – or exceed – our expectations and this is our honest, updated Oia Skin review.

How do Oia Skin silicone patches work?

When attached to the skin, silicone patches create what the company calls a “microclimate”, between the patch and the skin, ultimately creating what’s known as an occlusion effect

The science behind the pads suggests that the silicone on the skin creates an optimum environment for moisture.

One of the main causes of wrinkles – beyond ageing – is dehydration. If you’ve ever seen a grape become shrivelled after a few days, you’ll have seen its skin become wrinkled. This is because it doesn’t have any hydration.

Human skin works on a similar premise, especially on the thin skin beneath your eyes and on your chest.

These regions have fewer oil glands and, as a result, they lack natural hydration seen in other areas of the face and body. This is why they’re more prone to fine lines and wrinkles.

When attached to the skin, silicone patches create what the company calls a “microclimate”, between the patch and the skin, ultimately creating what’s known as an occlusion effect.

The occlusion effect reduces how much water is lost from your skin. By increasing the skin’s surface temperature and increasing blood flow, occlusion also helps your skin to be more hydrated and hence, helps it look and feel more healthy.

When the silicone pads are applied to these regions, it blocks air from reaching the skin and the silicone draws moisture to the surface. It’s so effective, silicone is regularly used in the medical industry to heal and protect skin.

With the Oia Skin patches, this moisture then remains on the surface because it can’t evaporate, and this works to plump up wrinkles and fine lines.

Oia Skin vs Oia Skin 2.0

The silicone layer itself is 400% thicker than Oia Skin 1.0 and there is a 30% increased flexibility in the upper layer

As mentioned, Oia Skin recently released a second-generation patch design and they are significantly different from the first. Aside from redesigned packaging, the first thing you’ll notice is that each of

the patches are individually sealed. Once you’ve peeled off the paper backing on each, you can store your patches on a square piece of bendy plastic that comes with the range.

The next big difference is that Oia Skin 2.0 patches have small holes dotted across them, they’re also noticeably more sticky – almost to the point where we couldn’t get them off our finger! – and they feel thinner.

Don’t be fooled by the latter, though. Although the overall design feels thinner, which actually makes them more comfortable to wear than the original, they simply make better use of the space.

The silicone layer itself is actually 400% thicker than Oia Skin 1.0 and there is a 30% increased flexibility in the upper layer.

The dots help the patches stick more firmly to the skin, and the thicker silicone is said to not only increase the hydration by 30%, but it helps give the patches longer durability.

If cared for properly, you can reuse these patches up to 30 times each. The original patches had to be replaced after 15 uses, so this doubles their longevity and offers better value for money.

More recently, Oia Skin released a Derma Face Lifting Mask – which is similar to the Wishful Skin Chin Lift – as well as a range of anti-ageing creams and serums. Many of these skincare products are sold out, but they’re only available in the US and Canada anyway.

Performance

As we learned from the original Oia Skin review, the longer you wear these patches, the better the results. You also need to wear them regularly to see longer-term changes.

The two silicone patches are shown on our neck and chest

That said, they do make a difference even when worn for 20 minutes or so.

With the Oia Skin 1.0, the first night we applied the patches before our neck cream had fully absorbed and while the neck patch stuck at first, by the time we’d woken up, it had shifted down. The second night, when using the chest patch, we learned from our mistake but the patch still struggled to stay put.

We have somewhat large, heavy breasts and sleep on our side. This is one of the reasons why the skin on our décolletage is already sagging and showing signs of ageing despite being only 36.

We believe that this caused the original Oia Skin chest patch to move and come away from the skin slightly as we slept as the weight of our breasts pushed it out of shape.

This was not an issue with Oia Skin 2.0. Both the neck patch and the chest patch, as well as the eye patches and the one for our forehead, all stayed put all night. They didn’t appear to move an inch and this is almost mind-blowing.

Because of this, the following morning the skin on our face, neck, and chest was plumper. Noticeably so. This was also the case with Oia Skin 1.0, and we didn’t think those original results could be topped, but Oia Skin 2.0 absolutely knocked it out of the park.

The horizontal wrinkle which has now become a regular feature on our neck was barely visible, while the fine lines that sit in our cleavage had vanished.

What’s more, this lasted for hours. Granted, by the end of each day, the lines had started to creep back once more but we were impressed with the effect.

Over time, this effect lasted even longer to the point where our skin looked plump and youthful all day.

On the odd occasion towards the end of our Oia Skin review when we forgot to use the patches, our skin was definitely more plump than it had been before we started using them.

Before the Oia Skin 2.0 patches were applied, and after

What else really impressed us was the fact that despite the strong grip the 2.0 patches had on our skin, peeling them off was easy. With Oia Skin 1.0, we were always worried about damaging the super delicate skin under our eyes when removing the eye patches and this is not even an issue with Oia Skin 2.0.

Conversely, if you wear these patches during the day, the neck and forehead ones particularly have a tendency to slip or come away a bit more from the skin. This is likely because those areas move a lot more during the day, when we’re awake than when we’re asleep. It’s not a major issue, seeing as you’ll get the best results wearing these patches at night anyway, but it’s worth bearing in mind.
