Turkey neck: What causes it and how to get rid of turkey neck without surgery at home

If you suddenly have a turkey neck or you’ve been seeing the signs for a while, here’s everything you need to know about what causes it and how to get rid of turkey neck without surgery

If you’re of a certain age, or you’re approaching it rapidly, you’ll likely be well aware of the dreaded turkey neck.

It’s a common name given to the sagging skin that starts to appear under the chin and around the neck of men and women as we all get older.

The skin on the neck is thinner and has fewer oil glands compared to the face and this makes it more susceptible to ageing and environmental damage.

This also makes it harder to get rid of or keep on top of and, as a result, it requires special care and attention to maintain its firmness and prevent premature sagging.

In this guide, we look at what causes turkey neck as well as how to get rid of it without surgery, at home.

Note: We’re not saying you should get rid of your turkey neck or that it’s anything to be ashamed of. Ageing is a privilege! However, if it’s something that’s bothering you, hopefully this guide is helpful.

Turkey neck: What causes turkey neck?

What causes turkey neck and does losing weight helpShutterstock

Turkey neck occurs when the skin around the neck loses its elasticity and begins to sag and droop. This is, sadly, part of the natural ageing process where levels of collagen and elastin – the proteins that give skin its firmness and elasticity – drop over time.

Factors like sun exposure, genetics, and lifestyle choices then make this worse.

Prolonged exposure to the sun without SPF, for example, can make skin age faster and that includes the skin on your neck and chest.  Similarly, smoking, poor diet, and lack of regular skincare can contribute to a premature loss of firmness.

If you suddenly have a turkey neck, this could also be due to weight loss – especially if it was quick – or a recent change in hormones, brought on by pregnancy or menopause.

What age does turkey neck start?

Turkey neck usually starts to appear in your mid-40s to 50s but it can appear earlier, or later depending on your genetics. If your parents or grandparents developed turkey neck at an earlier age, there’s a higher likelihood that you might experience it around the same time in your life.

It also depends on how well you’ve looked after the skin on your neck and how much time you’ve spent in the sun, if you smoke and if you’ve lost a lot of weight and have sagging skin across your body.

How to get rid of turkey neck without surgery

While turkey neck is a very common, very normal sign of ageing, if it’s making you unhappy or knocking your self-confidence there are several ways to get rid of it without necessarily resorting to surgery.

Get rid of turkey neck with skincare and SPF

Investing in skincare that’s rich in collagen-boosting ingredients like retinol and Vitamin C can help improve skin elasticity on your neck. You don’t have to use a dedicated neck cream either, although many have been designed with the skin on your neck in mind so are usually quite effective.

Hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin can then plump the skin, reducing the appearance of sagging.

Similarly, look for products with peptides which help stimulate collagen production, and antioxidants, which protect the skin from environmental damage.

In terms of sun protection, any SPF will do. You can either buy a moisturiser with SPF, or use sunscreen. We recommend some good sunscreens for your face and neck here.

Get rid of turkey neck with exercise

Massaging the neck area can stimulate blood flow and lymphatic drainage, helping to firm and tone the skin and get rid of your turkey neck.

Often, the process of cleansing, exfoliating and massaging skincare into your neck is good enough to stimulate this blood flow, but you can also get rid of turkey neck with exercise and facial massage. Exercising the neck muscles in particular can be a good way to reduce the appearance of a turkey neck.

These exercises focus on toning and strengthening the muscles and skin in the neck area and include:

  • Neck stretch: Sit or stand with your back straight. Slowly tilt your head back until you’re looking at the ceiling. Pucker your lips as if you’re giving a kiss to the ceiling, hold for a few seconds, and then release. Repeat 10-15 times.
  • Head lifts: Lie on your back on a bed with your neck on the edge of the bed and let your head hang relaxed off the side. Slowly lift your head towards your chest using your neck. Hold for 10 seconds and then slowly return to the starting position. Do this 5-10 times.
  • Neck rolls: Sit or stand with your spine straight. Slowly turn your head to the right and stretch it as far as you can without straining. Roll your head down (chin to chest) and then to the left, completing a full circle. Do this 5-10 times and then change direction.
  • Tongue Press: Sit with your back straight and shoulders down. Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Tilt your head back and forth slowly while keeping the tongue pressed. Repeat 10-15 times.

Get rid of turkey neck with diet

Diet alone won’t get rid of your turkey neck. However, improving your overall health will help boost your skin health and this can help increase collagen levels and similar.

Eating foods that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals supports overall skin health. Foods high in Vitamin C, E, and omega-3 fatty acids can boost collagen production and maintain skin elasticity.

Staying hydrated is also key for keeping the skin plump and firm. You can read more in our skin food guide.

Will losing weight help turkey neck?

Will losing weight help turkey neck?Shutterstock

Losing weight can have both positive and negative effects on your turkey neck.

Pros

  • Losing weight can help with your turkey neck by getting rid of fat deposits which can make your turkey neck more prominent.
  • Weight loss, especially if achieved through a balanced diet and regular exercise, can also improve the overall health and condition of your skin. Healthier skin may have better elasticity and tone, which can positively affect the neck area.

Cons

  • Rapid or significant weight loss can lead to excess skin, especially in areas where there were the most fat deposits. If your skin has lost elasticity already, because of age or similar, and then you lose weight, it may not shrink back to fit your new shape.

A balanced approach to weight loss, combined with targeted exercises and skincare, is the best way to manage the appearance of a turkey neck.

How to apply neck cream for turkey neck

Always apply products to the neck in upwards strokes. This helps lift the skin and reduce sagging.

We also recommend introducing an oil and gua sha, or a face and neck toning device like the ANLAN Turkey Neck Tightener or the NUFACE Mini.

The key with anything like this, and the only way you’ll be able to get rid of turkey neck at home, is to be consistent.  use of these creams can lead to noticeable improvements in skin texture and firmness.
