Rare Beauty Blush review: Does Selena Gomez’s Liquid Blush live up to the hype?

6th April 2024 | Author: Victoria Woollaston-Webber
Verdict

Rare Beauty’s Blush is subject to a lot of hype. Influencers rave about it, Google searches exceed 40,500 every month and if you even dare to criticise it online, you’ll get a loyal army of Selena Gomez fans on your case.

Thankfully – in terms of money spent but also in terms of avoiding this wrath! – we’re a big fan of this blush.

It’s a testament to the brand’s commitment to creating products that not only enhance natural beauty but also cater to a range of skin tones and needs. With its highly pigmented, yet lightweight formula, it stands out for its ability to deliver a natural flush of colour that lasts all day.

It’s particularly suited to people who prefer a buildable blush and like to mix up their looks between soft, everyday looks to more dramatic evening appearances.

It’s not perfect (sorry Selena fans) because it can be difficult to get the balance of pigment just right and it’s not a cheap product either. Overall though it’s a versatile product that upholds Rare Beauty’s ethos of self-expression and inclusivity and we wouldn’t be without it now.

In our Rare Beauty Blush review, we look at the Soft Pinch liquid blusher’s performance, application, and value to see whether it lives up to its hype

UPDATE: There’s a new take on the iconic Rare Beauty blush – a powder version that combines the pigment of the original with the luminosity of the Rare Beauty highlighter.

Called Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Powder Blush, it’s available in six shades.

The shades correspond with six of the shades available in the Liquid version and are designed to be worn on their own, or could even be used with the Liquid blush for extra pigment and luminous finish.

The six Rare Beauty Powder blush shades are:

  • Cheer – light warm pink
  • Hope – nude mauve
  • Happy – cool pink
  • Joy – muted peach
  • Truth – mauve maroon
  • Love – terracotta

Whereas the Liquid blushes come in a mix of matte and dewy finishes, all of the Powder Blushes offer the luminosity of the Rare Beauty Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter.

You can buy them directly from Rare Beauty, as well as Sephora for £25 each. Shop the new blushes using the button below, or keep scrolling to read our full Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Blush review.

Rare Beauty Blush Review

Soft Pinch Blush Rare Beauty UKmamabella | mamabella

The Rare Beauty UK range has been growing steadily in recent months but its Liquid Blush is still one of the most well-known, and well-loved products. It comes in two versions:

  • Soft Pinch Liquid Blush (Matte): As the name suggests, the matte Rare Beauty Blush offers a natural, long-lasting colour for a more subtle, matte look. Best for oily skin types or if you like a satin rather than a dewy finish.
  • Soft Pinch Liquid Blush (Dewy): This dewy version of the Rare Beauty Blush has more of a luminous finish that adds a subtle glow to the skin. This is perfect for dry or normal skin types and adds a youthful finish to mature skin too.

The Liquid Blush sits alongside the other Rare Beauty UK products:

  • Rare Beauty Stay Vulnerable Melting Blush: This is a cream Rare Beauty blush that melts into the skin for a natural, second-skin finish, ideal for dry to normal skin types.
  • Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer: The Rare Beauty highlighter offers a gentle shimmer to the skin, making it look like it’s lit from within or catching the sun.
  • Rare Beauty Lip Souffle Matte Cream Lipstick: A weightless air-whipped lip cream offering a soft matte finish that pairs well with the Blush ranges.

This blusher is incredibly popular and different shades come in and out of stock regularly. You can sign up to be alerted when your favourite shade comes back in stock or, if you can’t get the one you’re looking for via SpaceNK, Rare Beauty does now offer UK shipping. It tends to have more stock but you’ll need to wait longer and potentially pay custom fees.

How to use Rare Beauty Blush

How to use Rare Beauty Blushmamabella | mamabella

For the best results apply a small amount of blush to the cheeks and blend outward with fingertips or a brush.

It’s important to start with a minimal amount due to its high pigmentation. If you find that the pigmentation is still too much, put the blush on the back of your hand or a foundation palette and pick up a small amount on your finger and brush. You can always add more but it’s hard to tone it down if you use too much.

In our experience, try to avoid mixing this blush with oil-based products because it tends to melt off. Of course, if you use too much then this is a great way – if a little messy – to remove some of the pigment.

♥︎ Rare Beauty Liquid Blush review: Performance

Rare Beauty Blush shade Happy swatchmamabella | mamabella

The Rare Beauty Blush has a lightweight formula that makes it super comfortable to wear all day, without feeling heavy or cakey.

Whether you apply it with a finger or a brush, the Liquid Blush blends easily and gives a natural flush that lifts the skin. The matte version is particularly great because its colour is subtle yet surprisingly impactful. This makes it ideal if you’re going for a more understated look.

On the other hand, the dewy finish offers a more vibrant and youthful glow. The pigment and impact aren’t as strong as with the matte version but this makes it great if you’re looking for a luminous effect.

In terms of versatility, this blush works well on bare skin but also plays well with foundation. Both liquid foundations and powder finishes. The staying power is also great, and unless you have really oily skin, or pair it with oil-heavy products, it will last all day, or all night with very little fading or smudging.

In terms of value for money, the Rare Beauty Blush is expensive but a little goes a very long way. Seriously, you need the smallest amount to cover your whole cheek. Even a single dot is too much sometimes. To manage this, we now place a small amount on the back of our hand before going in with a brush and applying it to our face. This makes it much easier to build up.

This also means it lasts longer than cheaper versions due to the high pigment and coverage. We currently have the Rare Beauty Liquid Blush in Happy and one of the great things about this blusher is that it doubles up as an eyeshadow and even liquid lipstick. Adding to its value for money.

We also like that the range of shades caters to a range of skin tones, from pinks to mauves and deep berry colours. It could be better; Made by Mitchell sells 26 shades– double Rare Beauty’s 13 shades – but it’s a decent showing nonetheless.

Elsewhere, the pigmentation is intense, so you need to be careful when applying it to avoid overdoing it.  If you want to create a natural flush of colour, we recommend putting it on under a medium-coverage foundation so that the colour and Rare Beauty blush make your complexion flush, but it doesn’t look too intense.

How we tested Rare Beauty Blush

We tested the Rare Beauty Blush as our go-to blush for six weeks. We wore it every time we wore makeup and tried it with liquid and powder products, as well as oil-based and silicone-based ones.

We reviewed the blush based on how well it affected our skin’s appearance; how it felt on the skin; how easy it was to blend; if it caused any improvements or adverse reactions; how well it lasted, and if it caused any problems.

We also wore it on nights out and tracked how well it lasted going from work during the day into dinner at night, without any touchups.
