MAC launches Hyper Real skincare range with a serum, moisturiser and cleansing oil

There is a new MAC skincare range called Hyper Real designed to smooth and soften the skin while repairing its natural barrier

MAC Cosmetics has launched a new skincare range called Hyper Real complete with a serum-moisturiser hybrid, a moisturising cream and a cleansing oil.

These aren’t the first skin-focused products to launch from the cult makeup brand, but the range does stand out because it represents the first time MAC has launched a dedicated serum and moisturiser in this way.

Until now, the majority of MAC skincare products have enabled the application or removal of makeup. Few have been designed to be used on their own.

With the launch of its Hyper Real skincare range, MAC has launched three new standalone skincare products that can be used with or without makeup.

MAC Hyper Real

Each of the skincare products in the MAC Hyper Real range has been formulated to soften and smooth the skin, and help strengthen and repair your skin barrier.

They each feature what MAC calls its Pro-4 Power Infusion Matrix. This formula contains:

  • Japanese Peony Extract: Evens skin tone and improves radiance
  • Niacinamide: Brightens the skin, refines texture and smooths the complexion
  • Hyaluronic acid: Found naturally in the skin, hyaluronic acid attracts and seals in moisture
  • Ceramides: Restore and protect the skin’s natural barrier and helps the hyaluronic acid retain moisture
  • Mango and avocado butters: Soften and nourishes the skin

The serum  – called the Hyper Real Serumizer Skin Balancing Hydration Serum – is actually a serum-moisturiser hybrid designed to improve skin texture and strengthen and repair the skin barrier.

The moisturiser is called Hyper Real SkinCanvas Balm and MAC calls it “a moisturising cream that strengthens and protects the skin barrier”. It smooths skin while helping to soothe redness.

The cleansing oil is called Hyper Real Fresh Canvas and has been developed to remove all makeup and impurities, including waterproof and transfer proof makeup.

There is then an angled skincare brush designed to help you apply the skincare in the range.

MAC Hyper Real SkinCanvas Balm MAC

As the name suggests, the Hyper Real SkinCanvas is closer in texture to a balm than a moisturiser.

It can be used on its own, but it’s also been formulated to work underneath makeup by creating a smooth base. MAC even claims that using this balm helps keep makeup in place for up to 12 hours.

In consumer testing, 97% said the Hyper Real SkinCanvas balm left skin looking smoother, and 96% said this product improved the appearance of skin texture.

In addition to the Pro-4 Power Infusion Matrix, other ingredients in the SkinCanvas balm include a host of skin-softening oils – sunflower oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and avocado oil.

It also contains caffeine and St Paul’s Wort extract, both of which help invigorate the skin, boost the complexion, and can help with the production of collagen and elastin.

A 15ml, travel version costs £18 while the full-size, 50ml tub is £52.

Another product designed to be used with or without makeup, the Hyper Real Serumizer Skin Balancing Hydration Serum is a serum-moisturiser hybrid that “balances, retexturises and strengthens the skin barrier.”

It contains the MAC Pro-4 Power Infusion Matrix alongside a number of AHAs and BHAs including salicylic acid, lactic acid, and glycolic acid.

These ingredients chemically exfoliate the skin by penetrating different layers, removing the texture and leaving the skin looking brighter.

The Serumizer also contains linoleic acid which is an omega-6 fatty acid used as an emollient in skincare that also has antioxidant properties and helps plump the skin to make it look more youthful.

In consumer tests, 95% said the Hyper Real serum left their skin feeling soothed and hydrated and 8 out of 10 agreed it kept makeup looking fresh all day.

The Hyper Real Fresh Canvas Cleansing Oil dissolves makeup and helps remove pollutants, micro-dust, and impurities from the skin without damaging its delicate moisture balance.

It’s non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog your pores) and it contains sunflower seed oils, jojoba oil, and meadowfoam oil, as well as Vitamin E.

The latter two ingredients specifically have strong antioxidant properties to protect the skin from environmental damage. This helps soften and smooth the skin.

Despite the presence of oil, this cleanser is suitable for all skin types.

It’s somewhat of a myth that oily skin doesn’t need hydration and if you don’t give oily skin the nourishment it needs, it can actually make oiliness worse! You can read more in our science of oily skin guide.
